Conversion therapy, aimed at altering an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, is widely condemned for its harmful, coercive methods. It often employs shame and pseudoscience, resulting in psychological trauma, self-rejection, and lasting mental health damage. Affirmation therapy, while supportive in validating identities, can sometimes overemphasize external validation, potentially neglecting deeper self-discovery or fostering reliance on affirmation without addressing coexisting issues like ADHD, which can muddy the therapeutic process. Both approaches risk overlooking an individual’s unique strengths and core identity, either by enforcing change or scripting acceptance without holistic exploration. Luckily, there now is a third and better way!
