In this story, an astronaut was working alone aboard a small space station orbiting Earth.
Looking through a window, she noticed a dark shape approaching.
It grew larger and larger until it became an enormous spacecraft, far greater than anything humanity had ever built.
A vast docking bay opened, and the little space station was gently drawn inside.
When the astronaut climbed out, she found herself surrounded by thousands of extraordinary beings. There were furry creatures, scaled creatures, great cats, reptiles, rodents and animals unlike anything found on Earth.
A large red squirrel stepped forward and began speaking in an unfamiliar language. Seeing the astronaut's confusion, the squirrel tapped and adjusted a device near his ear until the translator finally found the right frequency.
The truth was astonishing.
The vessel was an ancient ark, launched hundreds of millions of years ago by a civilisation facing destruction. The original passengers had long since vanished, but the animals aboard had survived.
Over immense stretches of time, they had evolved, developed intelligence and created their own peaceful interstellar civilisation.
The astronaut had met the descendants of animals who had inherited an ark and transformed it into a thriving world.
The red squirrel like being opened his arms in welcome, while the assembled aliens watched with warmth and curiosity.
Humanity was no longer alone.
