Steve Collins
writes: At the closing of the EMO Conference Training in Gatwick
earlier this year I was talking with EMO/AMT/Reiki Trainer
and general energy master, Sally Canning. She was glowing (well,
it was the tail end of a three day ET conference!) and full of
excitement. Sally was going to Australia for a break and to see
loved ones the following month, but also, she explained, on her
return would begin preparations for the first UK Energy Cone
Technique workshop and with that introduce to the UK a man called
Tom Wynn, the techniques creator. Sally had many good words for
Tom and his Energy Cone work and so I buzzed with intrigue at her
enthusiasm. After telling me of Tom's presentation slot at the
ACEP (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology) conference
and giving me a brief explanation of the technique, Sally invited
me along to the workshop to find out more and see why a former
man of the sea from Ireland had left such a positive impression
with his new development in Energy Psychology...
So two months down the line, with an open mind and the assistance
of sometime-AMT-photographer and designated driver, Derek
McCarthy, I headed North to Nottinghamshire to attend the Energy
Cone Technique workshop. Here is my write-up which is followed by
a great interview with Tom.
Report:
After a 5.am start from the South coast (our 'driver' had not
driven north of London before and estimated at least a seven hour
journey, maybe more if we hit traffic!) and many instances and
opportunities to utilise some new personal ET discoveries -
clearing my (now previous) chocolate addiction for one - we
arrived in the beautiful town of Worksop. Approximately 5 hours
ahead of schedule! This gave us plenty of time to check in and
have a rest before attending the Sunday evening presentation
prior to the workshop on Monday. We arrived a little early to be
met by Sally and Tom and a great team of helpers busily making
their final preparations for the evening ahead.
Tom is a fantastic and open character, full of life, extremely
likeable and I could see why he received such wonderful reception
in the United States at the ACEP conference recently, and why he
seemed to stay so fondly in the memories of those he met. I felt
excited and at ease while talking with Tom about the conference
in California and learning a little about his technique before
the rest of the attendees began to arrive.
With camera/audio crew set up and ready to record the event, Tom
took to the microphone and began telling us the history and
science behind his Energy Cone Technique. Tom is an engaging
speaker with an enjoyable tendency to 'go off on a tangent', and
happily shared with us personal experiences along with detailed
information concerning the whys and how's in relation to
different aspects of his technique, much of which was explained
through understandings Tom discovered through his in-depth study
of Cranio Sacral work as well as both the lymph and meridian
energy systems. So far, so good!
Tom gave us our first demonstration of his technique on a member
from the audience and I wasn't too surprised at the surprise of
the volunteer as a long-standing issue was resolved fairly
quickly - energy work is fast! The shifts were clear to any keen
observer before any verbal confirmation from the volunteer or the
muscle testing that followed. Tom gave several more
demonstrations of his system in action, in between having us all
howl with laughter at his wicked sense of humour, and as the
evening drew to a close I was excited about the workshop and
opportunity to experience ECT the next day.
We arrived the next day, with my companion still slightly
sceptical.
"I'll just lurk around at the back and take some more
photos. I'm really tired and probably won't be able to focus on
the work"
"And besides, I expect there'll be tears" he joked.
And by the end of the day, with his full participation in the
workshop, there were. His!
Following some more fascinating background info from Tom and full
details of the process we began with our first exercises. In
short, the Energy Cone Technique begins by utilising the existing
relationship between the skin and the brain, the skin being the
physical outer limit of the brain. Because of this, the technique
can be initialised on any part of the body (as 'Energy Cones' are
found throughout the whole body) but works particularly well when
working on the hand as this is the most sensitive part of our
outer physical being, containing 20% of overall body sensitivity.
This is obviously also more practical when working with clients
in a professional setting.
Taking the 'clients' palm, we looked for any irregular marks,
small dots, dark spots or anything that seemed to stand out. Once
found, softly palpating the area with the fingertip would bring
to awareness feelings stored in the body along with associated
memories/images. Theses marks were often located on the fine
lines found in the palm and when there didn't seem to be any
obvious marks then simply following along these lines would
usually be enough to locate and elicit an 'Energy Cyst' that need
to be worked on - what others may be used to terming as
disturbances within the Energy body caused by emotional, mental
or physical trauma. Once located we would ask "And where do
you feel that in your body?" along with a few other set-up
questions and interventions, and from there follow with what we
employ during an EMO session - have the client focus on the
sensation and with their intention keep it moving until it exits
the body.
When this happens, there is an interesting occurrence where the
pulsating which can be felt above the Energy Cone slows down
before ceasing entirely. Very interesting and fascinating to
experience! This also serves as a great way to know when the
trauma has really been cleared completely or if there is an
aspect which still needs to be worked on, which again will prove
very useful when working with clients.
So in brief, the Energy Cone Technique quickly accesses injuries
or trauma which may not be in conscious awareness and allows for
quick and effective treatment.
ECT will make a fine addition to any therapists skill set and
should prove particularly effective for clients with kinesthetic
leanings and a true godsend for those who are not blessed with
knowing exactly what their problems are and where they can be
found! Client led and non-invasive, ECT and can be performed
safely by relatively inexperienced practitioners and I see one of
the its best aspects as being that interventions can truly be
content free, leaving less room for either the practitioner or
client to get lost in unnecessary pondering during drawn out
sessions. When working with energy (and working with it right!),
issues can, and should, be cleared with ease and often
surprisingly quickly. ECT gave me another fine example of this in
action at the workshop and I couldn't help but get excited. It
was like discovering EMO or experiencing EFT for the first
time.
Those with a keen interest in the psychic circuitry will also
find other aspects of Toms ECT rewarding on a personal level and
Hypnotherapists should have a great deal of fun integrating this
into their current set-up. For those of us working mostly or
primarily with energy, this is a great aid and problem finder
when other avenues of locating issues have been exhausted.
Using metaphor is a non-essential element of the current set up
that may not be entirely practical for all therapists, such as
those with limited skill/experience. Working with or introducing
metaphor in therapy can be tricky at the best of times, and many
energy therapists and practitioners of various techniques are
either trained to - or often choose to - steer clear when working
with clients in the professional environment. With that said,
those who's current work is based in techniques such as Symbolic
Modelling, NLP, Transpersonal Psychology, Jungian therapy, or
Psycho synthesis etc, will greatly appreciate this optional part
of the process. With ECT being so easily adaptable beyond its
unique set up, Tom has provided a host of possible methods to be
employed at various stages, providing simple, fast, effective and
pretty much guaranteed results in a safe client-focused and
client led fashion. ECT allows for the respect and privacy of the
client but leaves room for engaging in issues further and openly
if desired, also highlighting nicely the client-practitioner
dance which can be found in the most advanced and successful
methods currently being employed in the field of Energy
Psychology.
Combining the initialisation process of ECT and quick-sure power
of EMO should glide therapist and client smoothly through
what before could have potentially become an extremely intense
and lengthy session with abreactions galore - as can often be the
case when long buried and repressed issues are revealed for
seemingly the first time. I experienced this to some extent for
myself when working with a fellow attendee during an exercise.
After the first stage of the ECT process what Tom calls an
'energy cyst' was located easily by both myself and my exercise
partner as my forearm and wrist became tense and I said I felt
like it was burning. A memory came up which when emerged I
recognised fully. Without EMO at this point I really could
quite easily have had a total freak out, making all kinds of
insane decisions about myself and the world! Thankfully my
partner was a fully fledged ET practitioner (and as Tom had told
us earlier, at this stage in the process we use whichever tried
and tested tool works best for the job in hand) and so we worked
quickly, releasing and clearing the 'energy cyst' through various
blockages, and then worked quickly through several connected
issues which revealed themselves, through and out to the
Energised End State, reaching Even Flow . Whenever working with
energy I instinctively begin the EMO process as second
nature (and EFT when circumstance allows) and felt blessed too
have the tools of ET and the ECT as the reality of what we had
cleared hit me. So I did my best to ensure I didn't have a
complete apex moment and grinned at feeling so light and clear.
Where did I feel that in my body? All over! And it felt pretty
good....
The Energy Cone Technique will be easily adopted and easily
adapted into any current set of systems and techniques that
people are using when working with the human Energy system. A new
way of unrooting and releasing emotional injuries and
psychological traumas smoothly and eloquently - whether it's
issues below the level of awareness, buried in the subconscious
or yet revealed by the energy mind, ECT will throw a good few
surprises your way at the receiving end, which, processed with
the right tools, will be cleared quickly. ECT commands respect as
a stand alone technique but is perfect for adapting into an
existing system. The standard technique is simple and straight
forward, but any stage can easily be focused on in much more
depth if the client or practitioner feel it necessary - something
I can see being utilised by practitioners working on
themselves/exploring the technique personally or when working
with one another in research.
As well as feeling good results fast, I also noticed a definite
shift in my regular base states in the week that followed and
couldn't help but smile as I remembered the work we had done at
the workshop.
I'm sure the others who attended the workshop will join me in
looking forward to the arrival of full practitioner trainings, an
independent manual/self-help book and maybe even a little taste
of Tom at the GOE's European Energy Conference in 2007!
If you'd like to be kept up to date with the development of ECT
and when the first UK practitioner trainings will take place then
contact Sally Canning through her GoE Profile page. And take a
look at her website to read comments from others who attended the
workshop and find out why a full grown, (and at first very
sceptical) man cried like a girl - and was grateful for the
opportunity.
Soften & Flow that one, Mr McCarthy! ;-)
Thanks to all the people of Worksop and fellow ECT'ers who made
the experience so enjoyable (in particular Joyce who worked with
ET so well during our exercise), to Sally and her team for
organising such a well run event (and making such tasty quiche
and cake!) and of course to Tom for sharing this great new
technique with the World.
I caught up woth Tom after the workshop for a round of quickfire
questions which can be found below.
In the raffle draw which took place to raise money for Breast Cancer Care
(www.breastcancercare.org.uk) I won a hardback copy of ''What The
Bleep Do We Know ' which accompanies the fantastic film of the
same name. I will be donating this to the prize pool for the
AMT's fourth million hit competition, which, thanks to all you
many visitors, is now drawing close - look out for full details
coming soon!
Happy July folks and enjoy the summer! If it all gets a bit hot
for your liking then just remember - it's only an energy...

An Interview with Tom Wynn
Okay Tom, first of all and for those who haven't yet heard
about your technique, I think I'll start by asking you to explain
to us in brief what ECT is all about...
Hi Steve, First of all I would like to thank you for your
presence at the workshop. You have a wonderful “gravitas”,
an aura that enriches anywhere you are.
The ECT instantly accesses the energy of trauma held in the
body. Trauma is stored in the body as “energy cysts”.
(trapped energy). ECT brings the cysts to awareness with a light
gentle touch, then releases the trapped energy. It does this by
reversing the process by which the trauma entered the body. It
follows the 2 nd law of thermodynamics which states that energy
goes from organized to the disorganized and it takes organized
energy to reverse the process. The skin and light clothing are
regarded as the outer physical limit of the brain. When we touch
the skin the brain must respond, and brings up feelings in the
body that resonate with the energy of the touch. When the
feelings manifest themselves, any therapy of choice may be used
to remove them. Touching the hand is usually the most effective
way of accessing these “cysts”. When using the palm it
is much more effective if the chosen therapy does not involve
letting the clients hand go. The energy of the trauma can be
monitored by the therapists finger tip as it leaves the body.
Trauma can also be accessed by using the energy of a client’s
own words to bring feelings up, by a method called Basic
Perception, or First meaning. Ordinary words may be imbued with
trauma because their very first meaning was encoded in the
unconscious at a time of trauma.
What about the history of ECT and the journey that lead to its
creation - how did it come into being and where did it all begin?
I went to sea in 1956 as a deep sea Radio Officer. I bought a
book on palmistry to while away the long idle hours at sea and
became a “fair-ground” palmist, ie I told people what
they wanted to hear. But my readings began to be “good”
and people came to me for readings to help them make life
changing decisions. It made me anxious, so I gave it up. I took
it up again, for fun, after my wife died in 1992. I became a
hypnotherapist in 1998, and did all of the workshops and courses
available, usually twice, TFT , EFT, TAT, AFT, TAB, EMDR, Freeway
AMBIT, Parts Therapy, Time-Lining, Basic Perception, BSFF, and
others, as well as becoming a Reiki master, and other hands on
therapies, Cranio-Sacral, Bowen, Indian Head Massage, Paul
Newcome’s Gentle Touch, Metamorphic Technique, Manual Lymph
Drainage, and Applied Physiology. I am certified to teach
Hypnotherapy, EFT, TAT, and PLRT (Past Life Regression Therapy).
I have rubbed shoulders/dined/had discussions with Callaghan,
Craig, Yapko, Bannister, Nims, Brooks, Howard, Bandler, McKenna,
Bodenheimer, Keaney and many others. At the first European Energy
Psychology conference in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 2001, I read
Tarot and palms in the evenings “fun” time. I was
reading a lady’s palm when a mark on the palm looked like it
might be an ink mark. Marks on the palm are significant to
palmists, so I rubbed the mark to see if it could be erased but
instead she went into an abreaction. At the same time she clamped
her other hand on her tummy. Also at the same time I could feel
an eruption of energy in my finger tip. I knew how to handle
abreactions, so allowed it to abate. As it did so the energy
volcano under my finger faded, and when the abreaction was over
her hand fell away from her tummy. I was vastly relieved, and
went on with the reading. I moved my finger to another spot on
the palm, and the volcano came up again, she went into a milder
state than before and her hand went to a different place on her
tummy. This happened again, then the reading ended. The lady was
extremely tired, and relaxed. This was an uptight lady, and her
relaxed state caused comment. Others presented their palms and I
did exactly the same with the palm, and got the same result. I
knew I was on to something, but didn’t quite know what it
was. I started using the technique to explore my new discovery. I
gradually came to realize that I was working with the way nature
encodes learnings in the body. The nature of trauma is simplicity
itself, how it enters the body, how it becomes encapsulated and
how it can be “voided”. Using ECT is like drilling for
oil. Focusing on the energy is like striking oil, the pressure
drives the oil out in a gusher. The pressure in the cyst is
higher than the area around it, so must leave via the drill of
intent. As I explore the limits of ECT, I find the horizons
widening, and there seems to be no limit to its uses. I used it
on 2 expresidents of ACEP and was invited to present at the 2006
conference. My presentation was a wow, the biggest breakout
session at the conference.
You seem to have put a lot of effort into researching the science
behind your technique, something many people will appreciate -
was it important for you that people understood that part of the
process and why ECT works so well?
When I became a hypnotherapist in 1998 I was unhappy because
there was no real way of telling precisely what was happening in
the clients body. All the meridian energy and hands-on therapies
and techniques added to my appreciation of the energetic workings
of the human body, but it was the Cranio-Sacral technique gave me
the final piece of the jigsaw. This technique can actually locate
the energy cyst itself exactly where it lies in the body. This is
the key to the ECT. When the brain engages in a problem the
cranial rhythm stops, and restarts when the problem is over. That
gives the ECT 4 independent measuring devices, 2 of which cannot
lie, or be manipulated. 1. They are the cranial rhythm which
stops and starts; 2 the vibrational energy of trauma itself which
is felt in the finger tip (these cannot lie), 3. muscle testing
or idio signaling which answers yes/no questions and is very
reliable but can be manipulated if required, and 4. the SUD
system, subjective units of disturbance, reliable but can also be
manipulated. It is my passion to have this new approach
understood, and known. This technique becomes almost part of the
therapist as its operational simplicity and effectiveness changes
your perspective on the body, and its energy system.
What would you say were the pivotal moments for you in forming
your current understanding of the human energy system and how we
can work with it?
The first moment of truth was the time in Lucerne,
Switzerland, when I brought on the abreaction with the touch of a
finger during palmistry. That brought the awareness of the
special energetic relationship between the skin and the cyst in
the body. The next pivotal moment(s) were in the Cranio-Sacral
workshops. These brought an understanding of the way in which the
energy of overwhelm, emotional, mental, spiritual or physical, is
handled and stored by the body. The big realization was that the
body held the negatives, while the brain held the feel goods, the
opiates. The final pivotal moment was when I realized the value
of the cranial rhythm, which, when combined with the energy cones
gave extremely accurate measurements of the progress of energy
cyst elimination.
As well as being a great stand-alone technique the system
combines fantastically well with other existing approaches in
Energy Psychology. Which are your tools of choice when working
with ECT?
I raise feelings in the body using the energy cone technique,
and eliminate them with EMO. Any technique can be used to
remove these feelings, including Journeying, basic perception and
dialoguing, but EMO is the easiest, most client friendly
method of all. I have only used another technique a very few
times, usually because of client resistance.
You were asked to present at the ACEP conference in California
recently - how did ECt go down the other side of the pond?
The Americans went wild for ECT. It was the instantness of it
that appealed most to them. You know how Americans love speedy
results. I had the biggest breakout session of all 50 breakout
sessions, with over 60 attendees. We went well into lunch time,
but nobody left before the end. I have been promised that if I
apply again for next year 2007, I will be selected.
Did you find time to sit in on any interesting
worshops/lectures/presentations while you were there?
I went to all the workshops and breakout sessions that I
could. They were of interest, but none of them gave me a buzz. I
was nervous coming up to my presentation, but most of what I saw
and experienced was outside my view of therapy. That seems
arrogant but as I said earlier working with ECT seems to change
your perspective of trauma and treatment. However Bruce Lipton
gave a keynote presentation that was sensational. It was about
the way energy entered and was handled by the body, and fell in
with the view expressed in my breakout notes. I was over the
moon.
I hear you're set to present a second workshop on ECT in the UK
later this year with Practitioner Trainings to follow. What are
your hopes for the future of ECT?.
I feel that in a very few years ECT in one form or another
will be the standard intervention used by most therapists.
EMO combined with ECT is all one needs, the perfect match.
I will be presenting another ECT workshop in Worksop on Monday
August 28 th. I hope to have the ECT accredited, insured and then
have practitioner workshops. When accredited I hope to bring the
technique to the US.
And finally, if you were to be remembered for one quote, what
would it be?
ECT works wonders, quickly, easily and permanently. We change
the way we feel, to change the way we think, we change the way we
think to change the way we choose, so we can make better, more
informed decisions.
Thank you for your time Tom and for sharing this brilliant
technique with the rest of the world!
