Why do two people experience the same event but react completely differently later? From a mechanical perspective, the brain records more than the event itself. It records the references built around it (reactions from others, interpretations, and the meanings attached to the experience). Over time these references become mental programs that the nervous system runs automatically. This is why a small event can sometimes turn into a large emotional response later.
