Lost In Lost - EMO To The Rescue!
Dr Silvia Hartmann writes: Knowing something about energy flow, and how we experience and process information, which is also "only an energy!" comes in handy sometimes ... Well, to be honest, it comes in handy ALL the time. But once in a while, the life advantage of EMO turns up in the strangest of places. Do you watch Lost?
If you do, you will already know what I'm about to say ...
If you don't, Lost is an American TV show which has been getting progressively weirder and more complicated as the seasons rolled from one into the other.
We're not just dealing with a multitude of people about whom we don't have conclusive information, just flashes and flashbacks here and there; we're not simply dealing with straightforward time travel about the nature of which we also do not have any kind of conclusive information; we're not just dealing with a number of different conspiracies (yes, of course, not enough information ...); we're not just dealing with strange metaphysics and synchronicities - that would be too easy ...
Personally, I'm speculating that there is time travel of CONSCIOUSNESS involved, but that's neither here, nor there.
The new season of Lost started in the UK last week and we were promised that "answers were coming".
Instead, me and my 19 year old son were both so thoroughly confused that a point was reached where it actually started to hurt.
When the consciousness is confronted with that many open ended loops as have put into place in Lost, AND if a person has a well functioning, logic sorting, highly intelligent and superfast mind, you don't simply give up trying to compute this insanity.
What happens is that the circuitry literally overheats as it tries on a million, a billion potential causes and effects to make sense of what is being presented there.
And that hurts!
About ten minutes into this torture, I had the bright idea of saying, "I know what to do! We cannot compute this - there isn't enough information! And if you don't have the information, the base data, you can speculate for all infinity and just drive yourself crazy!!
"We shall have to take the EMO approach to Lost - sit back, drop shields, DON'T TRY AND WORK IT OUT, and just let it stream in, through, and out."
A deep sigh of relief was had by both simultaneously, as we relaxed as one into the couch, the tension drained from the room and certainly from my body, the colours of the very, VERY beautiful Lost island in HD became brighter and pain was replaced by just having fun as the various events unfolded - and went in, through, and out.
Cause-and-effect overwhelm entirely relieved.
Emotional distress soothed away.
Physical and mental tension released.
And a good time was had by all.
And the moral of the tale?
This would be, ANY form of learning something new, for example.
Just let the information flow in, through, and out.
Either you'll get it eventually as enough information has been assembled to make a jig saw puzzle you can begin to recognise.
Or you don't, in which case at least you didn't hurt your brain, your mind, your body, your spirit and your self concept of being an intelligent human being.
And thus, when the closing screen flashed up and said, "Lost - Only 36 Episodes To Go ..." we just fell about laughing instead of breaking down and clinging to each other, crying.
We'll be there, and we'll be enjoying the whole Lost trip to the max all the while.
Thanks to EMO!
